Learning and exploring at the Écomusée!

A journey back to industrial Montreal

Discover the history of Centre-Sud, a former working-class neighbourhood, and immerse yourself in the heart of industrial Montreal of yesteryear!

The Écomusée welcomes groups of all school levels (elementary, high school, college, university, francization), as well as community organizations and groups with disabilities or special needs.

Écomusée Activities

The permanent exhibition, All the Livelong Day! The Joys and Sorrows of Life in a Working-Class Neighbourhood, highlights the daily life of working-class families of yesteryear, as well as the changing world of labour and its effects on the population.

Understanding the history of the Écomusée’s location, a former public bathhouse, also provides insight into hygiene conditions in working-class neighbourhoods.

The activity takes place in the permanent exhibition All the Livelong Day! The Joys and Sorrows of Life in a Working-Class Neighbourhood. Divided into teams, students answer a questionnaire that guides them through the different areas of the exhibition.

Educational levels:

  • Elementary school (Cycles 2 and 3)
  • All secondary school grades
  • Francization: advanced level

Duration: 90 minutes
Capacity: 10 to 60 people
Cost: $6/student, $9/student for two activities on the same day

This immersive activity takes place in the first part of the permanent exhibition All the Livelong Day! The Joys and Sorrows of Life in a Working-Class Neighbourhood. Students begin with a short guided tour of the exhibition. The group is then asked to retrace the story of Rosaline Thibodeau, their pen pal from the past.

Grades: Elementary school Cycles 2 and 3

While touring the permanent exhibition, All the Livelong Day! The Joys and Sorrows of Life in a Working-Class Neighbourhood, students explore the history of labour and reflect on the social issues in their community.

Covering a wide range of topics, our temporary exhibitions offer something for every student, whether they are interested in architecture, urban planning, visual arts, history, heritage, or museology. Check out our program to see which exhibitions are currently on display.

Outdoor activities

The Écomusée offers a variety of outdoor activities.

Join us for a stroll through the Centre-Sud neighbourhood! Take part in a lively group tour of Ontario Street, a commercial thoroughfare, and explore other cross streets in the Centre-Sud neighbourhood.

Educational levels:

  • Francization: advanced level

Duration: 60 to 90 minutes
Capacity: 10 to 25 people
Cost: $6/student, $9/student for two activities on the same day

The urban tour is also available to community organizations and can be adapted for groups with disabilities or special needs.

Learn about the objects in the Écomusée’s educational collection with a Cultural Mediator, who will give you historical overviews and lead lively discussions. Thanks to the Cultural Mediation Kit, you don’t even have to leave the classroom. A member of the museum team will come to you with a kit full of history!

Area served: Island of Montreal, Longueuil, and Laval

  • $6 per person
  • $9 per person for two activities on the same day
  • These rates are for groups of at least 10 people*.

* Groups of fewer than 10 people can choose to take a self-guided tour or opt for a guided activity by paying the 10-person rate.

Payment can be made on site on the day of the outing or an invoice can be issued. We accept cash, checks, debit cards, and credit cards.

In case of cancellation, please notify the Écomusée staff at least one week in advance.

The Écomusée does not have a room designated for group meals. Groups may, however, bring a cold lunch/snacks and eat in the old swimming pool, upon reservation and at no extra charge.

We welcome groups from Monday to Friday, during the day.
