An award recognizing the contributions of one of the Ecomusée’s co-founders

Tuesday, May 26, 2026 – René Binette, founding member and former director of the Écomusée du fier monde, was awarded the Medal of the National Assembly of Québec by Saint-Marie-Saint-Jacques deputy Manon Massé this past Wednesday, May 20th.

In awarding Binette this distinction, Massé emphasized the importance of the role of the Écomusée du fier monde in Montréal’s Centre-Sud neighbourhood, and the devotion of its inhabitants to their museum. Having been involved in the Écomusée’s creation in 1980, Binette’s contribution to the field of museology in Québec is exceptional. Considered to be one of the leading players in the field of community museology, he has also helped to redefine the role of the museum itself as a social actor, anchored in its local environment and open to all.

Today, René Binette continues to contribute to the rethinking of the role of the museum in society, as he remains directly involved with the Écomusée as its Strategic Projects Advisor. The Medal is a well-deserved recognition for an individual who still has much to offer to the “fier monde” of the Centre-Sud.
