Montréal, Wednesday, September 4, 2013- The Chut! Regardez… A fresh look at disability exhibition presents a series of 30 black and white photographs by artist Guy Fortin featuring people who live with an intellectual disability, some associated with various syndromes and some not. The exhibition is a moment of pride for these men, women, and children; it likewise offers the public a chance to get a different look at their reality, beyond appearances and clichés. The exhibition is on display from September 5 to October 13, 2013, at the Écomusée du fier monde.

A fresh look

Chut! Regardez… is the result of a process that is as much personal as social and artistic. It is a look from within. Through the photographs, the participants recount their passions and their everyday lives in confidence, and express their zest for life, their creativity, and their courage. In addition to the series of photographs, a slide show projects images of objects that are meaningful to the participants. Chut! Regardez… invites you to ask yourself what it is that makes us different.

A historic overview

For a long time, people with an intellectual disability were called imbeciles and idiots. They were lumped together with those labelled insane. Learn how the concept of intellectual disability has evolved from the 18th century to today and discover the gains made over the years.

A publication

An eponymous publication is available for purchase on site. The royalties and profits from the sales go to the Centre de Répit-Dépannage Aux Quatre Poches.

The Écomusée du fier monde invites you to travel back to the time of the Industrial Revolution! As a history and community museum, we encourage you to explore the history of labour and reflect on the social issues in the area. The Écomusée is situated in the former Généreux public bath, a magnificent example of 1920s architecture.

The Chut! Regardez… project has been made possible in part through a grant from the Museum Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.
